Can you put your muscles to work at sport?

BOB KENNEDY TACKLES THE VEXING

QUESTION OF ABILITY AND THE BODYBUILDING SPECIALIST

HOW TO BUILD A MAGNIFICENT BODY IN JUST 5.MINUTES A DAY!

IT IS A question not often asked of the bodybuilder, but it would not be true to say that it not often thought. "Yes, you bodybuilders are very big and muscular, but what can you do?" The inference that the bodybuilder works out solely to look good is obvious. It's all for 'show'.

No. The layman doesn't expect a golfer to be an adept sprinter, neither does he expect an Olympic swimmer to be a 7-foot high jumper; but when he sees the massive muscularity of a competitive bodybuilder, he expects more than a strength demonstration of a heavy bench press as proof that his efforts are worth while. The feeling is that a man with such tremendous muscles should be a great all-round performer in sport. The fact that he may well be able to bench press 3001b. squat over 500lb. and dead lift phenomenal poundages, counts for little. In spite of the fact that one hardly reaches these standards after a few weeks training !

This raises the question of whether or not there should be an ability test in physique contests, as is not uncommon in America. Of course, the answer is no! A physique contest is to judge the individual standards of physiques. We have other competitions to assess the merits of athletes in other sports. Whoever heard of a javelin thrower, for example, being asked to show his skill in some other activity as part of his judgment assessment. If an ability test is introduced as part of a physique contest, such as weightlifting performance, then let that contest be called a combined physique and weightlifting contest. Not just a physical excellence affair.

An athlete can be jack of all trades or just a master of one. That is why we have such an event in the Olympic Games as the decathlon, where several events are practised and the winner determined by all round performance, considering each category, as opposed to individual Olympic tests such as weightlifting, swimming or judo.

However, the point remains that the layman expects the modern bodybuilder to be capable of other "things".

So let's not disappoint them... to my mind it is always worth learning something impressive even if only for your own enjoyment and satisfaction. If you are a bodybuilder, beginner, intermediate or advanced, and if you cannot already hand-balance, then do learn. It's so easy and one activity that ideally combines with weight training.
